You are probably wondering why we have a whole book dedicated to special grooming considerations. The reason is simple: although hairless and wrinkled dogs may seem like easy dogs to groom, they are actually quite challenging. There is more to do than simply brush the dog, and this book will go over those special grooming needs in detail.
I will take you through caring for the hairless dog, and also through battling those wrinkles that some breeds have. Caring for your dog’s skin and wrinkles is as important as caring for his coat, so make sure that you don’t take short cuts on these.
In addition, it is important to remember that a hairless dog isn’t always completely hairless, and you will need to care for the furnishings like you would care for a coat on any other type of dog breed.
Before we launch into the book, however, I would like to start by listing a number of popular dog breeds that are known for having wrinkles or for being hairless. Please bear in mind that the list only covers AKC-registered breeds. There are many other dog breeds, including designer breeds, that have this type of coat and will need the grooming considerations detailed in this book.
Breeds that have wrinkles are:
- Bloodhound
- Bullmastiff
- Dogue de Bordeaux
- English Bulldog
- English Mastiff
- French Bulldog
- Neapolitan Mastiff
- Pekingese
- Pug
- Shar Pei
Breeds that are hairless are:
- American Hairless Terrier
- Chinese Crested (hairless)
